When it comes to owning a boat, proper maintenance is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance on the water. As a sailor, understanding the ins and outs of boat maintenance can help you avoid costly repairs and keep your vessel in top shape for all your sailing adventures. Here is one of the largest jobs of bringing new life into your yacht, the top sides. In this video you can see the transformation as I take the hull back to the gelcoat, removing years of paint, scratches dents and rebuilding her to an as new finish.

  1. Step one, removing the existing paint, this was the hardest part taking in total four weeks of sanding, day and night. Initially using two orbital snaders simultaneously, then fairing with the felxicat, filling fairing. Then before the new finish goes on a final sand with 1500 grit.

  2. Building the new finish starts with a reltively thick undercoat of internatinoal perfection pro, four coats of undercoat thinnning out more each coat then finally mixing the last undercoat with half and half of perfection pro gloss. Sanding down the undercoat with 2000 grit before applying the gloss.

  3. Top coat going on thinned down, sanding between each coat at 2000 grit applying five top coats by rolling and tipping.
